From Farm Life to Locksmith Life
I was born on a farm just outside Barnsley. My family still farm today in North Lincolnshire, and when I left school at 16, I went straight to work on the land.
At the time, I didn’t realise it, but farming taught me the exact skills I rely on every day as a locksmith: problem-solving, patience, and how to fix things properly.
My dad used to say I was always “meddling”. He wasn’t wrong. I’ve always been curious about how things work. As a kid, I would take two old bikes apart and rebuild them into one faster bike. Looking back, that was probably the first sign I was heading for a hands-on trade.
If You Break It, You Fix It
Working on a farm, speed matters — especially when the weather’s about to turn. My goal was always to get from one end of the field to the other as quickly as possible. The downside? I broke the machinery — a lot.
But my dad had one rule:
“If you break it, you fix it.”
That lesson stuck. And I had to learn fast how to repair machinery.
By the time I left farming, I was confident stripping things down, diagnosing faults, and rebuilding them so they worked properly again. That mindset is exactly what being a good locksmith is all about.
Locksmith Training & Accreditation
In my late thirties, my circumstances altered. I needed a career change, and while considering options, I stumbled across the locksmith industry. I initially bought into a franchise, as franchises were “big” in those days and a popular way to quickly access an industry and have the additional support of a company behind you. But within 18 months, I set off on my own.
I received my initial training from the franchise itself, but I felt I needed more, and that was when I got my first real bit of luck. I was very fortunate to meet a gentleman called Bennie Wells, the ‘God’ of the locksmith world, and I managed to secure one-to-one training with the guru himself. Those two weeks with Bennie changed everything, and I fell in love with locksmithing there and then.
I quickly realised how much I enjoyed the world of locksmithing. Every day, I learned something new (I still do) and excitedly told everybody around me — I think I became a little boring to anyone listening, but nobody said so!
As expected, I am Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) registered, a member of the Federation of Small Businesses, and an Accredited Locksmith. These all hopefully add credibility to me and my business.

Stephen Fretwell, Locksmith – More Than Just Lost Keys
I’m Stephen Fretwell, a local locksmith, and one of the biggest myths about my job is that it’s all about lost keys. While lockouts do happen, they actually make up a small part of my working week.
Most of my time is spent helping homeowners, landlords, and businesses across South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire with real-world security issues. My day-to-day work commonly includes:
✔️ Repairing composite and uPVC doors
✔️ Upgrading door locks to improve security and insurance compliance
✔️ Attending evictions, burglaries, and domestic incidents
✔️ Repairing uPVC window locks and window handles
✔️ Replacing mortice locks, garage locks, shed locks, and digital/code locks
✔️ Diagnosing faults and repairing locks where possible, rather than replacing them unnecessarily
Put simply, if it locks, unlocks, or should do — I can help.
A Career Built on Problem-Solving
Being a locksmith is a hands-on job that rewards experience, attention to detail, and calm thinking under pressure. No two jobs are the same, and that variety is exactly why I enjoy what I do.
It’s also a trade built on trust. Customers rely on me to secure their homes, businesses, and families, and I take that responsibility seriously. I’m proud of the reputation I’ve built locally and plan to be doing this job for many years to come — retirement can wait.
Here to Help & Advise
One of the best parts of my job is meeting new people and helping them feel safer in their own space. I’m very customer-focused and never forget the trust people place in me when they call.
Great customer service matters just as much as technical skill. When you choose me, you can expect to be treated with respect and professionalism. I aim to be:
✔️ Friendly and approachable
✔️ Honest and transparent
✔️ Reliable and punctual
✔️ Clear with pricing and advice
My locksmith reviews reflect this approach, and I’d encourage you to read what local customers say about my service.
